The Quiet Advantage Hidden In December

This time of year seems to bring the same chorus from everyone:

But here’s the quiet truthThis is exactly the time when the last stretch matters most.

Right now—yes, right now—is the ideal moment to:

  • Set clear goals for the final quarter (the one you’re in right now)
  • Position yourself to do good business when others have mentally clocked out
  • Prepare strategically for a new fiscal year that will be here in a blink

And yet… most business owners struggle with this.

  • Not because they’re lazy.
  • Not because they don’t care.
  • But simply because they don’t know how to set goals that actually work.

And honestly — it’s not as complicated as we make it.

Yes, yes — we’ve all heard about setting SMART goals and having an action plan and being accountable. Bla bla bla.

But here’s the truth: Your goals should be simple, practical, and easy to execute.

Not fancy. Not impressive. Not something that sounds good in a boardroom.
Just achievable. Real. Clear.

And most importantly — they should be designed to help you spot opportunities that everyone else is ignoring because they’re already mentally on holiday.

Here are a few simple ideas to help you set at least 3 meaningful, impactful goals for this last stretch of the year:

1. Remember — your customers are in the same boat

They’re also tired. Also wrapping up.

So ask yourself: what can you do to help them end strong?

What do you offer that they now finally have time to consider?

2.  If you offer a service — think ahead

Have you positioned yourself in their budget for next year?

Now is the perfect time to explore:

  • What else might they need
  • How can you improve your offering
  • Where can you add value

Because planning for their growth makes you part of their future.

3. Don’t be shy to upsell

Bundle offerings.

Create add-on value.

Design packages that make sense.

This is often the time when clients say, “You know what — let’s just get it done.

4. Invest time in nurturing relationships

Go beyond the “thanks for the business” email.

  • Have real conversations
  • Ask questions
  • Show appreciation
  • Listen

The human-to-human connection matters — especially now.

5. Clean up your own house

Do those “I’ll get to it later” tasks:

  • Refine your offer
  • Review your pricing
  • Tidy your workspace
  • Organise documents
  • Do your budget
  • Prepare your own plan for next year

A clean environment creates a clear mind.

6. Do a post-mortem of your year

Ask yourself:

  • What worked well — and should be repeated?
  • What didn’t work — and must not be repeated?
  • What did I want to do, but never got to — and now must prioritise next year?

Reflection is not indulgent — it is strategic

Final thought:

Use these ideas to create real goals for your business, and also to help your clients shape theirs.
